“I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldn’t get there. And she was married.”
“I did try and fuck her. She was married.”
“Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.”
“Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.”
-Donald Drumpf (Trump)
I get it. This is deplorable and in fact, it’s proving to be the last straw for some Republicans. It’s great to finally see where the line is drawn. I hate to say it but Trump doesn’t exist in a vacuum. He was talking to a fellow male behind the comfort of closed doors. From what we can tell, Billy Bush also didn’t say anything in response except laugh. When most of us hear violent statements towards women, we will say and do nothing. It’s incredibly difficult to break the code of silence which governs masculinity.
Yes, Trump is an asshat but he is merely an honest reflection of the culture which created him. Below are four quotes to serve as a reminder of how pervasive these gendered structures are among our most powerful “leaders.”
“We in the Senate refer to Senator Gillibrand as the hottest member.” — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.)
“She lectures us on eating right while she has a large posterior herself.” — Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.)
“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” — Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.)
“I’ll beat her rear end on that stage and afterward she’ll be relieved that I didn’t serve her with a subpoena.” — Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ.)
‘Nuff said?
